Earlier this year, we carried out spray foam insulation treatment to a Sea King helicopter which recently featured in George Clarks’ Amazing Spaces on Channel 4. Catch up with the programme here.

The helicopter was originally bought from the MOD by the owners of Mains Farm Wigwams of Thornhill near Stirling for conversion into a luxury holiday home to sleep a family of up to 5. It’s now been added to their range of accommodation which includes caravans and wigwams with extensive views over the surrounding countryside.

The helicopter was sprayed with BASF WALLTITE CL100 closed cell foam to insulate the aircraft and reduce any risk of condensation forming on the metal fuselage. In order to incorporate a shower room, beds, a kitchen and dining area, internal space had to be maximised and the foam treatment was ideal as it didn’t require any special fixings or ventilated spaces whilst also overcoming any potential thermal bridging issues. The seamless and high adhesion properties of the material also meant that the unusual curved shape of the fuselage could be fully treated without cutting or forming joints. The project was filmed over several weeks with key elements such as the spray foam treatment being featured in the programme. Filmed in real time the application process was seen to be quick and effective and the helicopter was treated within one day.

This was an unusual but interesting project to be involved with which emphasized the varied uses and applications to which sprayed insulation can be applied. We have now successfully completed work covering the Land, Sea and Air including buildings, marine craft and of course this Sea King helicopter.
