Air sealing at the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service HQ

Air sealing at the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service HQ

We were recently contacted to solve a problem of unwanted air movement between different activity zones at the new Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service HQ being built in Edinburgh.

The Main Contractor, Interserve needed to seal the perimeter of laboratories and research rooms to prevent the movement of bacteria  which could arise due to differing air pressures within the main building. After a visit to site we put forward proposals and although access was impeded by service ducts and in some cases suspended ceilings, work proceeded according to plan. BASF WALLTITE CL100 foam was spray applied at the junction of partition walls and the structural ceiling to provide an effective air seal between each zone. It was necessary to liaise with other contractors to avoid working above their tradesmen so our team worked a back shift ensuring that most of the work would be carried out whilst the site was relatively quiet.

The initial treatment was so successful from both an operational and technical point of view that  the  Main Contractor extended the field of work to include additional areas including pipe and flue penetrations through the roof.
